Why should we have compassion for troubled and disruptive kids?

It is really very simple – a child does to others what has been done to them. Or they are hurting little children and their behavior is their voice screaming for help. Another reason is they need someone to love them and give them the caring and loving attention little children need.

Children aren’t born mean. There may be some predispositions such as depression, ADHD, etc. but children don’t set out to be troublemakers or disruptive kids.

Generally it is learned behavior because of what has been done to them or modeled for them.

  • If someone has hit them – they will hit.
  • If someone has kicked them – they will kick others.
  • If someone has yelled at them – they will yell at others.
  • If someone has bullied them – they will bully others.
  • If someone has ignored their basic needs and not shown them trust – they will turn inward and not trust others.

The list goes on and on.

Families may start out great but then divorce enters the scene. Parents get stressed. Adults begin to exhibit unfavorable actions and behaviors. Kids get out of control.

In DC4K, DivorceCare for Kids, we see kids calming down and bringing their behaviors under control when

  • they learn they have a voice
  • they put a name to their feelings
  • someone is listening to them
  • they see appropriate reactions modeled for them

My heart goes out to the child of divorce because most are calling for love. Love meaning

  • Healthy relationships
  • Knowing someone empathizes and understands them
  • Boundaries
  • One on one time
  • Healthy touches such as hugging, cuddle time with a parent/caregiver
  • Knowing someone cares
  • Appropriate interactions with others are modeled for them
  • Being introduced to loving and gracious Heavenly Father
  • Coming to know there is the Savior Jesus Christ waiting to become their best forever friend

I don’t believe God created any child to be thrown away and our society is throwing these kids away.

I want them to see Jesus, feel Jesus and get to know Jesus.

I want to show them a heavenly Father’s unconditional love.

What about you?
