10 things kids of divorce do well

confident.

Did you know that while divorce is heart breaking for children there are many things kids of divorce do well? Oh, maybe not at first but eventually as they heal and move forward with their lives, they have a few advantages over other kids who haven’t experienced the break up of their family.

Here are some of the things they do well

1.  They have a deep understanding of painful life events.

2.  As children they are more empathetic overall than their counterparts.

3.  They have sympathy for their hurting friends.

4.  As children they are intuitive to adult body language.

5.  As they grow they carry this innate ability to read body language into their jobs, ministry and families. A good trait for many involved in their lives.

6.  They take on the responsibility of caring for others.
They take care of younger siblings.
Some times they take care of their parent also.

7.  As tweens and teens they are cognizant to bullying and many refuse to be bullied or to bully others.

8.  Many have a deeper bond with grandparents, as they don’t get to see them as often as they wish they could.

9.  Overall they have a special tenderness for the elderly.

10. They love Jesus on a deeper level than most kids.

Take a moment to look deeply into the eyes of a hurting child and know that their future holds some wonderful and incredible moments as they turn their hurts around and their hearts to Christ.

I know several wonderful children’s ministers who experienced the divorce of their parents. Their hearts are tender toward the Lord. They love Christ so much they want to share with all the children in their ministries. They have walked that road of hurts and they have survived through God’s grace and mercy and they aren’t afraid to share their childhood experiences with the children.

      • Linda, you offer great blessing with these words. Thank you once again for all that you do! I’m sharing it with my DC4K team and college interns helping this semester in class–and my four adult children from my blended family.

        • Thanks Karen, but it’s because of DC4K leaders like yourself that we are able to see “good things” in our kids who have experienced the divorce of their parents. Share away. Much appreciated.

  2. This had me in tears. My baby girl is a child of divorce and is exactly this. She also experienced the loss of her father 3 years ago at the age of 6. Even her understanding of death is beyond some adults comprehension. She doesn’t even call it a grave, instead it’s his garden because he’s not their anymore. Her heart is beyond words. Thank you for this
